DAY 1 Monday, July 10th

-Meals are not included.

 

Participants arrive to San Juan, Puerto Rico, and settle into the residence. Transfer is not included.

Trip coordinator will be on site to welcome you.

 

DAY 2 Tuesday, July 11th WELCOME & INTRODUCTION TO HISTORY OF PUERTO RICO AND ITS POLITICAL AND COMMUNITY ACTIVISM MOVEMENTS (San Juan)

+Includes Breakfast

-Lunch and dinner not included.

 

9:00 am |  Meet and greet your fellow travelers and trip facilitators over breakfast.

 

10:00 am | Learn about the Political History of Puerto Rico with Dr. Palmira Rios.

 

11:30 am | Discover the hidden art history of Puerto Rico with curator and cultural producer Dr. María Elba Torres Muñoz.

 

1:00 pm| Meet at bus meeting point. Bus leaves at 1:15pm.

 

1:30 pm| Lunch Break

 

3:00 pm | Get to know the colonial history of  Puerto Rico by embarking on an architectural tour of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city of Old San Juan. Architect.

 

5:00 pm | Cafecito- Join in a tertulia (dialogue) with members of some of the socio-political movements in Puerto Rico, while you enjoy a cup of coffee. / Movements: Campamento Contra La Junta, Free Oscar.

 

6:00 pm | Bus returns to residence.



 

DAY 3 Wednesday, July 12th COMMUNITY ORGANIZING & PARTICIPATION (San Juan & Carolina)

-Meals are not included.

 

9:00 am| Meet at bus meeting point. Bus leaves at 9:15am.

 

10:00 am | Explore the organized community of Península de Cantera, through the eyes of its own members and leaders.

 

12:00 pm | Lunch Break

 

2:00 pm | Visit Patio Taller (Workshop Patio), a multidisciplinary opened space co-created by collective Las Nietas de Nonó (Nonó’s granddaughters) and their community. The space is used as a place to host dialogues, workshops, and art residencies that promote the integration of the community.

 

5:00 pm | Bus returns to residence.


 

DAY 4 Thursday, July 13th TRADITIONS AND ACTIVISM (Loiza)

-Meals are not included.

 

9:00 am| Meet at bus meeting point. Bus leaves at 9:15am.

 

10:00 am | Visit artist Samuel Lind at his studio and gallery in the town of Loíza, and engage in a conversation about Traditions and Activism.

 

12:00 pm | Feast on some African and Indigenous inspired dishes at El Burén de Lula.

 

2:00 pm | Beach Time in Piñones.

 

3:30 pm  |  Learn about community organizing with the founder of Cooperativa Piñones se Integra (COPI), Maricruz Rivera Clemente.

 

5:00 pm | Bus returns to residence.


 

DAY 5 Friday, July 14h RESURGENCE OF LOCAL ENTERPRISES AND FROM STREET ART TO THE GALLERY (San Juan)

-Meals are not included.

 

10:00 am | Meet at bus meeting point. Bus leaves at 10:15am.

 

10:30 am | Let’s meet one of the most prominent contemporary artists in the Island, at the Museum of Art of Puerto Rico, and engage in a dialogue about the commodification of street art.

 

12:00 pm | Let’s visit Lote 23 and indulge in the different gastronomic options this repurposed lot has to offer, all while surrounded by urban art.

 

3:00 pm | Visit pop-up style market Santurce Pop, and learn how Puerto Ricans are creating spaces to promote local brands, ensuring that the economic power resides locally.

 

5:00pm | Bus returns to residence.


 

DAY 6 Saturday, July 15th PRESERVING INDIGENOUS CULTURES IN A COLONIAL CONTEXT

-Meals are not included.

 

8:00 am| Meet at bus meeting point. Bus leaves at 8:15am.

 

10:00 am | Visit Concilio Taíno Guatu-Ma-Cu A Borikén at one of their ceremonial grounds located in the town of Guayanilla.

 

12:30 pm | Lunch Break

 

2:00 pm | Sightseeing through the South West of the Island. Make sure to bring your bathing suit.

 

5:00pm | Bus returns to residence.


 

DAY 7 Sunday, July 16th | FOOD REVOLUTION (Center of the Island)

-Meals are not included.

 

8:00 am | Meet at bus meeting point. Bus leaves at 8:15am.

 

10:00 am | Farm and learn more about the trade from local farmers during our visit to a working farm in the high mountains of Puerto Rico.

 

12:00 pm | Lunch Break

 

2:00 pm | Learn more about how the food and culinary industry in Puerto Rico has found its way back home

 

5:00pm | Bus returns to residence.


 

DAY 8 Monday, July 17th  GENTRIFICATION & REINVENTING SPACES THROUGH ART AND CULTURE (San Juan)

-Meals are not included.

 

9:00 am| Meet at bus meeting point. Bus leaves at 9:15am.

 

10:00 am | Learn the history of the rapidly-changing community of Santurce by joining lifelong resident and historian, Dr. Lester Nurse, in a tour of Calle Loíza.

 

11:30 am | Traverse Calle Loíza and meet Sofia Unanue, from project La Maraña, at Casa Taft 169. Sofia and her colleagues are dedicated to revitalize cities through participatory design.

 

1:00 pm | Lunch Break

 

3:00 pm | Stroll Art District Santurce Es Ley (Abey Charron/Javier Cintrón).

 

5:00 pm | Bus returns to residence.


 

DAY 9 Tuesday, July 18th |& ENGAGING ARTISTS AND COMMUNITY (Ponce)

-Meals are not included.

 

8:00 am | Meet at bus meeting point. Bus leaves at 8:15am.

 

10am | Get VIP access to the studios and art incubators of  Puerto Rican master artists Antonio Martorell and Diogenes Ballester. Learn from them how they have been using a participatory approach to create art with their communities.

 

1:00 pm | Lunch Break

 

3:00 pm | Test your dance moves with live drumming music by Grupo Esencia, at La Cuarta in Ponce.

 

6:00pm | Bus returns to residence.


 

DAY 10 Wednesday, July 19th ISLA CULEBRA (Culebra)

-Meals are not included.

 

8am | Meet at bus meeting point. Bus leaves at 8:15am.

 

10am | Let’s get transported to the island of Culebra by ferry. Isla Culebra is an island-municipality of Puerto Rico. It is located approximately 17 miles east of the Puerto Rican mainland, 12 miles west of St. Thomas and 9 miles north of Vieques.

 

1:00 pm | Lunch Break

 

3:00 pm | Depart Culebra by ferry

 

4:00 pm | Bus returns to residence.


 

DAY 11 Thursday, July 20th REFLECTIONS: CULTURE, ARTS & CHANGE (Rio Piedras)

+Includes Dinner

-Breakfast and lunch not included.

 

10:00 am| Meet at bus meeting point. Bus leaves at 10:15am.

 

11:00 am | Explore the community of Río Piedras. Centuries ago this neighborhood used to be the engine behind the industrialization of Puerto Rico. Meet some of the community members and entrepreneurs leading its revitalization.

 

1:00 pm| Group breaks to enjoy of a free afternoon to wander around! This is your last day!

Bus returns to residence.

 

6:00 pm | Farewell Dinner
 

DAY 12 Friday, July 21st

-Meals are not included.

Group departs. Transportation between the residence and the airport is included in the cost of your ground package. There will be one transfer for early flights & one trip for late flights. Please, arrange with the coordinator during the first days of the trip.

 


GROUND COSTS:

 

Cost of the ground package is $1,600 USD. Rate is based on a minimum of 20 travelers and is subject to final confirmation. Prices are per person based on double room occupancy. All taxes included.

 

INCLUDES:

Accommodation for 11 nights

Air-conditioned transportation and professional driver

All activities, speakers, meetings and visits

Transfer between the residence and the airport on the last day (One trip for early flights & one trip for late flights)

 

NOT INCLUDED:

Airfare to and from Puerto Rico

Meals, except those noted as "included” in the itinerary

Transportation or access to any other activity not listed in the itinerary

Transfer from the airport to the residence on the first day
