A Professional Development Evening for Educators: The Black Side of the Sun: African Heritage of the Americas

The Education Department of CCCADI is excited to offer educators an evening event centered on exploring the African Heritage of the Americas. The evening will include a wine reception, special curator tour, and lecture presentations. Educators will receive CCCADI information and lesson plan materials connected to CCCADI’s Teaching Living Cultures (TLC) K-12 Arts Education programs, and TLC school gallery tour programs.

5:00 pm - 5:45 pm | Special Guided Exhibition Tour, Defend Puerto Rico with Curator, Mikey Cordero

Defend Puerto Rico features the images and voices of the Puerto Rican people through sharp photographic and multimedia art experiences. This exhibition is a wonderful demonstration of how art and culture can be used as tools for healing and finding the strength to rebuild after man-made (i.e. P.R.O.M.ES.A.), and natural disasters (Hurricane Maria), bringing forth the best in our community.

6:00 pm - 7:15 pm | African Heritage of the Americas W/ Africana Professor & Scholar and C. Daniel Dawson

Presentation & conversation focused on the African influence and historical foundation of what is considered US popular culture, in language, music, foods, and also how particular African-based cultural forms survive in parts of Mexico, Brazil and throughout the Caribbean.

7:20 pm - 8:00 pm | Masquerades & Music: Trinidad & Tobago’s Musical History W/ Traditional Leader and Artist Michael Manswell, Something Positive, Inc.

A brief exploration of popular music forms such as calypso and Soca, along with an introduction to concepts and traditions such as Egungun (ancestor) celebrations, masquerading traditions of West Africa and their Caribbean counterparts like Moko Jumbies and the John Bullassee character in Carnival festivals.
