A Professional Development Evening for Educators: Choosing the Brown Crayon - Our Children Succeed With Culturally Relevant Education

The Education Department of CCCADI is excited to offer educators an evening event centered on the impact of culturally relevant education. The evening will include a wine reception, a special Race, Myth, Art and Justice exhibition tour, lecture-presentation, and hands-on artmaking workshop. Educators will receive CCCADI information and lesson plan materials about our CCCADI’s Teaching Living Cultures (TLC) K-12 Arts Education programs, and TLC school gallery tours.

Program Schedule:

4:00 pm | Check-in & Wine Reception

4:20 pm | Welcome & Intros

4:30 pm - 5:45 pm | Activity (A) Cinderella to Cendrillion - The Intentional Storyteller W/ Museum Consultant, and Storyteller, Juliet Gray

Presentation & workshop on developing tools and strategies on implementing African & Caribbean stories for primary learners, with special focus on Black cultural traditions. Please bring a personal object which will be shared with the workshop. Space limited to the first 30 attendees 

4:30pm - 5:45 pm | Activity (B) Cultural Learning Tools for the Differently-Abled with Autism Consultant & Sensory Enrichment Coach, Stacy Badon

Presentation, workshop, & conversation on the necessity of being culturally competent, and creating culturally relevant communication strategies with children of color on the Autism spectrum.

6:00 pm - 7:15 pm African Dance & Culture - Using A Mind Body Curriculum W/ Arts Education and Curriculum specialist, Hanan Hameen

Using an Artsucation™ curriculum, educators will experience time-honored movements and rhythms, with an opportunity to connect and understand the positive impact of Black dance on student learning.

7:15 pm -7:30 pm | Wrap Up + Evaluations

7:30pm | Dismissal
