FORGOTTEN

LANDS

Forgotten Lands

by Cory Bishop and Don Brodie

In 2017 Cory Torres Bishop & Don Brodie co-produced a benefit art show in Brooklyn, NY to help those affected by hurricanes Irma & Maria in the Virgin Islands & Puerto Rico. After this exhibit was positively received and proceeds were given back to damaged communities and unrepresented artists from the same diaspora, momentum continued and inspired the team to create an annual publication known today as FORGOTTEN LANDS.

We Lit especially highlights Forgotten Lands: Volume 5 - The Haunted Tropics

Volume 5 showcases 18 artists across the Caribbean and the Diaspora while examining the colonial origins that are still at work within and around the Caribbean today. While delving into this neocolonial theme, this publication also imperatively considers the context of these matrixed layers of identity and the reality of our own displacement in the current post-globalized world.

Vol. 05 featured artists: Daurius Figueira / Ed Maximus / Emann Odufu / Gervais Marsh / Guarionex Rodriguez Jr / Hew Locke / José Morbán / Leasho Johnson / Maelynn Ford / Maridelis Morales Rosado / Patience Williams / Pilar Castillo / Ricardo Miguel Hernández / Sandra Brewster / Savannah Lyons Anthony / Shari Phoenix / Sharmadean Reid / Steve Maldonado Silvestrini / Yelaine Rodriguez

Don Brodie is a first-generation, Jamaican-American photographer and filmmaker based in Brooklyn. Brodie’s studies started at Howard University in Washington, DC, and completed a graduate program from Parsons the New School for Design in NYC. Being a twin and 1 of 4 siblings, his work represents collected inspiration from his family's perspective and experience but is also heavily influenced by the American alternative scene and unique subcultures.

Cory Torres Bishop is a Crucian-Rican (Puerto Rican from St. Croix) who began his artistic endeavors as a set designer for Mary Howard before founding his own product design and consulting company that works with fellow entrepreneurs and creatives. With an Afro-Puerto Rican mother from Harlem, his move from the Caribbean to NYC after high school was a drastic change but the city soon became his second home. Cory now splits his time between St. Croix and NYC, both serving as a perpetual source of inspiration.
